Sussex Author Julia McKelvey Self-Publishes Her First Children’s Story Book

Sarahjane had the pleasure of creating the artwork for The Dog with the Question Mark Tail, a children’s story book written by Sussex author Julia McKelvey. The project involved bringing together photographs and illustrations of Julia’s handmade puppets with beautiful artwork created by her illustrator friend Francois Viljoen.

Working closely together on layout ideas, amendments, and creative adjustments, Sarahjane helped Julia see her vision develop into a finished book quickly and efficiently. Using Adobe InDesign for the main page layout and Adobe Photoshop to edit, cut out, and prepare images, Sarahjane created a polished publication ready for print.

The finished book showcases the charm of the handmade puppets alongside the illustrations, creating an engaging visual experience for young readers.

For more information about the book, visit Julia’s website or purchase through Brown Dog Books.

InDesign Panels Used to Create Digital Exercise Books by Remote Artworker Sarahjane Jackson

Freelance Indesign Artworker Brighton, bids, book, brochures, long text reports

Leo Learning provided Sarahjane with their branded Adobe InDesign templates to artwork digital exercise books for accountancy exam students. Using advanced InDesign features including paragraph styles, character styles, table styles, and object styles, Sarahjane created consistent, professional layouts across a large collection of complex learning materials.

The text-heavy documents were imported from Microsoft Word and structured using flowing text, allowing content to be added, edited, or removed efficiently throughout the production process. Each book included detailed charts, tables, diagrams, and accessible digital content, carefully formatted for clear learning and navigation.

Sarahjane created detailed contents pages for each book and individual modules, generating bookmarks and hyperlinks within the final interactive PDFs. The same InDesign files were also prepared as print-ready artwork, allowing non-digital students to receive printed versions of the learning materials.

This large-scale project involved exercise books ranging from 500 to 800 pages, completed over six months. Working remotely with graphic designers, project managers, and proofreaders through Google Chat, Sarahjane maintained an organised workflow using digital spreadsheets to track progress and ensure everyone understood the project status and next steps.
