Advanced InDesign skills used to create 800 page digital books
Leo Learning gave Sarahjane their branded InDesign template to Artwork exercise books for accountancy exams. Using InDesign with its paragraph, character, table and object styles to keep all the books consistent, these are advanced InDesign skills. The text was set in a flowing manor, imported from Microsoft Word, this helped with any additions or extraction of content. Pages included charts, tables and diagrams, all made accessible friendly.
A full table of contents was included and one for each module. These create bookmarks and hyperlinks for easy use throughout the documents for the final PDFs. These books also had to be ‘print ready’ using the same InDesign document, for the the non digital students.
This was a huge project, the books varied from 500 to 800 pages long, over 6 months. Working closely and remotely (on google chat) with other graphic designers, project managers and proofers. Digital spreadsheets where used for progress, and everyone knew were they where and what they where doing.
Artworker uses photoshop paths for beautiful illustrations

Keeping to the graphic designers style and theme. Using Photoshop paths for a seamless cut out and overlay of images.
Artworker creates installation diagram in Adobe Illustrator
Drawn over the top of photographs to create a perfect simple outline illustration to use as an installation diagrams. These drawings are made as a vector file and can be used in multiple ways either for print and on the web.
Keeping the artwork to exactly the client specifications to create ‘how to’ diagrams.
Microsoft Excel is limited for creativity and design but InDesign can create company branded tables from your Excel tables. By importing and setting up table styles Sarahjane can quickly change many tables to look the consistent e.g. the same colour and fonts. They can also flow neatly from page to page. Tables are a fantastic way to layout lots of data neatly.
Artworking 50 charity campaign packs for the Art Director
The Art Director created templates for this five item campaign pack. Sarahjane created master pages and artworked each pack by inserting the text, updating the map, choosing images creating a relevant pattern for each country.
Working closely with editors and account managers on amends and consistencies, the artwork was created efficiently and quickly.
Legal document updated to new brand colours and logos
A Microsoft Word document is usually supplied in a real mess, a collection of different fonts and colours. This can be imported directly into InDesign and manipulating the font to fit on four sides and still be readable.
Sarahjane also created an interactive PDF, recreated a T&Cs layouts, made amends to existing projects and help create an EPUB.
Working remotely I was asked to design a staff stock catalogue using existing website branding (colours, logo and fonts). A simple and quick layout of 26 pages. This lead to me creating two more catalogues, two order forms and a stock leaflet. Using the latest Adobe InDesign to create the layout and PDF’s for amends and comments.
Freelance Artworker assisting other Freelance Designers
Sarahjane is very happy helping out other fellow freelancers, Designers and Artworkers, in-house or remotely. Urgent projects with tight deadlines can crop up unexpectedly and or all at once. A picture heavy layout, updated with many different languages. Communication is key to have the correct text on the correct page.
