Converting QuarkXPress Files into Adobe InDesign

Quark Layout Converted into an Adobe InDesign File

Older QuarkXPress layouts can be converted into Adobe InDesign files, but online conversion tools will usually only provide the basics. Colours, images, and text may transfer across, but the converted document often requires further artwork, formatting, and proofing to ensure it is production-ready.

As an experienced artworker, Sarahjane understands that converted files can contain hidden issues, such as unnecessary text boxes, incorrect styles, and inconsistent formatting. Rather than relying on a conversion alone, she can rebuild layouts properly in Adobe InDesign, creating a clean, organised, and reliable file that is ready for print and easier to update in the future.

Applying Corporate Branding to Complex Technical Documents

Sarahjane undertook the challenging task of producing EDF’s text-heavy craft manuals in Adobe InDesign. The project involved eight manuals, each approximately 600 pages long. The original 1970s manuals were scanned into Microsoft Word files, which Sarahjane imported, formatted, and transformed into consistent, professional publications.

Working from the designer’s corporate branding and guidelines, Sarahjane created structured styles to maintain accuracy and consistency throughout every document. She also built automated contents pages and navigation links for each section, making the large manuals easier to use and update.

Highly organised with a logical approach to problem solving, Sarahjane ensured this complex publishing project was completed efficiently while maintaining strict brand and production standards.

What is an Artworker?

An Artworker Is the Designer’s Mechanic

A car designer creates the vision, but it’s the mechanic who builds, fine-tunes, and keeps the vehicle running smoothly. The relationship between a graphic designer and an artworker is much the same.

While designers focus on creativity and visual concepts, a professional artworker specialises in production, using Adobe InDesign to its full potential with master pages, paragraph and character styles, tables of contents, GREP where appropriate, and efficient keyboard shortcuts. This expertise makes artworkers faster and more accurate when producing large documents such as catalogues, brochures, reports, tenders, and other complex publications.

An artworker creates clean, well-structured layouts that maintain consistency, follow corporate branding guidelines, and are easy to update when client amendments arrive. By anticipating future changes and organising studio files including images, Word documents, PDFs, and version-controlled artwork projects remain efficient and accessible for the whole team.

Ultimately, an artworker takes care of the technical production, allowing designers to focus on what they do best: creating outstanding design.
