Growing Hollingdean WordPress Website Built and Updated by Brighton Artworker

Growing Hollingdean WordPress built updated by Artworker Brighton 2024

WordPress Blog Updates Shared with the Local Community

Sarahjane built and maintains the Growing Hollingdean WordPress website, helping the community share local events, projects, news, and updates. WordPress is an affordable and flexible platform that allows organisations to create a professional online presence using custom designs, templates, and regular blog posts.

Growing Hollingdean needed a simple way to connect with local residents, promote events, improve their online presence, and share information through social media and newsletters. WordPress brings these elements together, allowing new blog posts to be published on the website, shared with subscribers, and promoted through Facebook.

A regularly updated blog is a powerful way to keep a website active and engaging. Real photographs, community stories, and event updates create an authentic marketing tool that helps people understand the work being done and encourages them to get involved.

Community Website Support and Volunteering

Sarahjane started volunteering with Growing Hollingdean in spring 2023 and has actively supported the community by taking part in Tree Guardians, helping to care for Hollingdean’s street fruit and nut trees. Through website support, photography, and digital updates, Sarahjane helps share the group’s work promoting greener spaces, more trees, and local biodiversity across Brighton.

InDesign Artworker Automates Multi-Level Contents Pages for Interactive PDFs

Freelance Artworker Brighton, InDesign content layout by Sarahjane Jackson

Using Adobe InDesign Styles to Create Automated Contents and PDF Bookmarks

A well-structured Adobe InDesign project can include a fully automated table of contents, index, footnotes, and glossary. Sarahjane uses advanced InDesign styles to create consistent document structures, allowing contents pages to update quickly and accurately as layouts change.

When exported as an interactive PDF, Adobe Acrobat can convert these contents into bookmarks, making long, text-heavy documents easy to navigate. This is especially valuable for tenders, reports, brochures, manuals, and other complex publications.

Adobe InDesign also allows multiple tables of contents within the same document, making it possible to create separate navigation sections for important elements such as figures, images, tables, and chapters. Sarahjane uses these advanced features to create professional, user-friendly documents that are organised, accessible, and easy to update.

A Simple Family Tree Layout Ready for Print and Interactive PDF

A Family Tree Designed for All Ages to Explore

Family trees are a wonderful way to bring generations together, and adding photographs makes them even more personal. Sarahjane Jackson, aka Moth, created her own family tree using Adobe InDesign, producing artwork that could be printed at home on A4 pages as well as viewed digitally as an interactive PDF.

Instead of creating one oversized sheet of paper, the family tree was designed as a flexible multi-page document. The printed version uses clear arrows and page references, allowing pages to be arranged together like a jigsaw. The digital version includes interactive navigation, with clickable arrows allowing users to move easily between family members and sections.

Multi-Function Artwork Created by Sarahjane

Sarahjane designed the artwork to work across different formats and for all age groups. The InDesign file, images, and supporting information are carefully organised, with photographs saved using each person’s full name and date of birth for easy reference.

Stored securely in the cloud, the artwork can be updated in the future with new family members, photographs, and additional information, creating a lasting family document that can continue to grow over time.

Converting QuarkXPress Files into Adobe InDesign

Quark Layout Converted into an Adobe InDesign File

Older QuarkXPress layouts can be converted into Adobe InDesign files, but online conversion tools will usually only provide the basics. Colours, images, and text may transfer across, but the converted document often requires further artwork, formatting, and proofing to ensure it is production-ready.

As an experienced artworker, Sarahjane understands that converted files can contain hidden issues, such as unnecessary text boxes, incorrect styles, and inconsistent formatting. Rather than relying on a conversion alone, she can rebuild layouts properly in Adobe InDesign, creating a clean, organised, and reliable file that is ready for print and easier to update in the future.

Table design is neat and tidy and can be achieved with Adobe InDesign styles for a consistent look and feel. A colour of font change can be made with one click instead of multi page amends. Using InDesign, the tables flow nicely from page to page the same a Microsoft Word and can be easily imported. There is more control in InDesign to Word and will look more professional.

Rebranding Hundreds of Product Learning Guide Leaflets

Sarahjane was commissioned by Image Data Group to rebrand hundreds of product learning guide leaflets for John Lewis Partnership, creating updated versions for each individual product while following strict brand guidelines. Applying Corporate Branding to Complex Technical Documents

Sarahjane undertook the challenging task of producing EDF’s text-heavy craft manuals in Adobe InDesign. The project involved eight manuals, each approximately 600 pages long. The original 1970s manuals were scanned into Microsoft Word files, which Sarahjane imported, formatted, and transformed into consistent, professional publications.

Working from the designer’s corporate branding and guidelines, Sarahjane created structured styles to maintain accuracy and consistency throughout every document. She also built automated contents pages and navigation links for each section, making the large manuals easier to use and update.

Highly organised with a logical approach to problem solving, Sarahjane ensured this complex publishing project was completed efficiently while maintaining strict brand and production standards.

What is an Artworker?

Artworker EDF Manual Indesign
Artworker EDF Manual Created in Adobe InDesign

An Artworker Is the Designer’s Mechanic

A car designer creates the vision, but it’s the mechanic who builds, fine-tunes, and keeps the vehicle running smoothly. The relationship between a graphic designer and an artworker is much the same.

While designers focus on creativity and visual concepts, a professional artworker specialises in production, using Adobe InDesign to its full potential with master pages, paragraph and character styles, tables of contents, GREP where appropriate, and efficient keyboard shortcuts. This expertise makes artworkers faster and more accurate when producing large documents such as catalogues, brochures, reports, tenders, and other complex publications.

An artworker creates clean, well-structured layouts that maintain consistency, follow corporate branding guidelines, and are easy to update when client amendments arrive. By anticipating future changes and organising studio files including images, Word documents, PDFs, and version-controlled artwork projects remain efficient and accessible for the whole team.

Ultimately, an artworker takes care of the technical production, allowing designers to focus on what they do best: creating outstanding design.
