Worked closely with marketing, the account manager and the brand graphic design team. Using newspaper and magazine InDesign templates with the Newmarket branding. Layouts where updated with the latest tour images, text, T&Cs and prices. Once approved by the team, a print ready PDFs was sent to the relevant media partners.

The amazing team are highly organised with shared spreadsheets and weekly meetings. Work included planned adverts to last minute print deadlines.

300 icons added to google maps to create large Growing Hollingdean printed map

Google Maps is helpful for adding live local information, using it to help residents find what fruit and nut trees are in their neighbourhood, see the map close up here. Google maps can be personalised with your own icons designed in InDesign. Once Sarahjane added these she created a large printed version of the map to display at Hollingdean Community Centre during the annual plant sale and AGM. A little volunteering can help lots of people and we have to remember that not everyone is tech savvy.

Sussex Author Julia McKelvey self publishes her first story book in Brighton

Sarahjane had the pleasure of creating the artwork for ‘The Dog with the Question Mark Tail‘, a children’s story book written by Julia McKelvey from Sussex. She was asked to bring together photos and illustrations of Julia’s handmade puppets and merge them with beautiful illustrations from her friend Francois Viljoen. Working side by side on amends and tweaks, this helped Julia see her ideas come together quickly. Sarahjane used Adobe InDesign for the main layout and photoshop to cut out the images. Sarahjane built and maintains Growing Hollingdean‘s WordPress website. WordPress is inexpensive platform where you can buy a domain name and build a website using free WordPress templates. Growing Hollingdean needed to reach local people, to promote events, have a better web presents, on socials and a newsletter. WordPress does all this in one, when you publish a blog posts on the website it also goes out to your subscribers and onto Facebook for FREE.

A blog website is a great way to keep people informed and up to date. Its a diary of photos and events that you have been up to, a truthful marketing tool! It keeps your website up to date, active and interesting. Photos are easy nowadays and there is no excuse for not having real time photos.

Sarahjane started volunteering with Growing Hollingdean in spring 2023 and has actively been taking part in Tree Guardians looking after the Hollingdean’s street fruit and nut trees. Brighton is in desperate need for more trees and wildflower areas and Growing Hollingdean are dong their bit.

Sarahjane artworks InDesign layout into a tidy, editable PowerPoint template. The design incorporates client branding, with fully editable slides and master pages to reuse. Users can easily insert text and maintain consistent fonts and colours with the added theme. InDesign is also used to create branded components to use on your slide, e.g. icons, logos, image cut-outs, all with transparent backgrounds.

To create a PowerPoint it is really helpful to know what you want it to do. PowerPoint can seem daunting at first but Microsoft have helpfully added ‘how to’ videos to there website see here. Remember keep your PowerPoint simple.

InDesign panels used to create digital exercise books by remote Artworker Sarahjane Jackson

Freelance Artworker Brighton create long text heavy InDesign artworker with multi TOC

Leo Learning gave Sarahjane their branded InDesign template to Artwork exercise books for accountancy exams. Using InDesign with its paragraph, character, table and object styles to keep all the books consistent, these are advanced InDesign skills. The text was set in a flowing manor, imported from Microsoft Word, this helped with any additions or extraction of content. Pages included charts, tables and diagrams, all made accessible friendly.

A full table of contents was included and one for each module. These create bookmarks and hyperlinks for easy use throughout the documents for the final PDFs. These books also had to be ‘print ready’ using the same InDesign document, for the the non digital students.

This was a huge project, the books varied from 500 to 800 pages long, over 6 months. Working closely and remotely (on google chat) with other graphic designers, project managers and proofers. Digital spreadsheets where used for progress, and everyone knew were they where and what they where doing.

Acrobat comments are the quickest way to highlight artwork amends

PDF comments and sticky notes

Viewing your artwork PDF proof and highlighting changes quickly, helps everyone concerned. Here’s how. Without having to describe where on a page they are and using clear simple instructions such as delete, replace or add, all help speed the process up. Amends can be shared and added to the PDF artwork and these clearly show the persons name, replies can be added too. Did you can also copy ‘n’ paste text to and from a PDF, keeping human error to a minimum.

Spider graphs for a legal report created by remote Freelance Artworker

Sarahjane artwork report data as a spider graph and a radar chart

Graphs are easy for Sarahjane to design using Illustrator and them imported into an InDesign report layout. Using supplied data and her Artworker skills, Sarahjane changes the colour to match the document branding.

This 240 page legal report contained 40 graphs as well as lots of tables. Once the first graph was approved Sarahjane quickly created the rest.

Graphs come in different shapes and can be designed to fit the space available on a page. Working closely with the consultant the report was finish before the deadline.

Student handbook created in InDesign by Freelance Artworker

The Art Director created the design concept and the branding with the college. From this branding Sarahjane created the 44 page Student Handbook and Pre-arrival Handbook as print ready artwork. 

The Artwork consisted of setting up InDesign master pages using styles. Collating images and using Photoshop to save them as print ready. Changes and amends where added to the PDF proofs by the college and Sarahjane completed these to reach the final version.
